MISSION
To improve peoples’ overall quality and standard of life, through holistic, long-term, integrated rural community development programs. Special focus is given on the poor, marginalised and disadvantaged people and community groups in remote, difficult to reach mountain communities.
OBJECTIVES
Our main objectives are:
- To improve the overall living, health and hygiene conditions through relevant preventative measures such as awareness, education and applied holistic rural development projects.
- To improve the living conditions through the implementation of context related holistic community development projects (such as defined in the following points).
- To implement the “Family of 4” concept, light, smokeless metal stove, pit latrine and drinking water, in entire villages and individual houses.
- To provide energy services in the form of rural village electrification projects for light (through solar photovoltaic systems or pico-hydro power plant) in each house, and hot water through solar water heaters for community bathing centers.
- To improve the food and nutrition availability and variety of high altitude mountain communities’ through greenhouses, solar driers and nutrition programs.
- To improve quality of life through Non Formal Education (NFE) for out-of-school children and mothers, skill based training of local people for the maintenance of all implemented projects.
- Through ongoing, innovative new project development, research of applied renewable energy technologies, and projects’ long-term follow-up, data monitoring and recording, understanding long-term impact and changes and appropriate development approaches are possible.
- RIDS-Nepal/USA sends teams of volunteers from the USA and around the world for two-week village stays. Each volunteer brings a unique skill set, a heart to lend a helping hand, and a desire to encourage the village farmers they live among. This project has been sending teams since 2007 to support the RIDS-Nepal village development initiatives.
PRIORITIES
Our top priorities are:
- The poor, marginalised, socially oppressed and underprivileged individuals and communities in remote and mountainous areas.
- Special attention will be given to women, children and senior citizens.
- The main working area are the remote, mountainous, difficult to reach and least developed areas such as the districts of Humla in the Karnali zone.
